Local By Flywheel is a cool Local Development Environment for WordPress Theme or Plugin Development. A few Spartans were facing problem in installing and configuring XAMPP.
In this Task # 17, we first downloaded WAMPserver (64 bit), and installed step by step. We then learnt how to change ports for WAMP by going to Apache Conf. file. We changed the port from 80 to 8080.
We restarted all services and WAMPserver started as Green. If icon is red or yellow, it means all services or one of the services (php, mysql (mariadb) and Apache) is not working properly.
Secondly, we talked about Vagrant and Serverpress. And discussed how we can install these Local Servers and set them up for WordPress Development.
The core part of this tutorial is to download and install Local by Flywheel. It’s a wonderful free utility for more than 90 % WordPress users. We explained each and every step needed to set up our pc for local dev environment.
Sometimes, there is an error. “This computer doesn’t have VT-X/AMD-v enabled. Enabling it in the BIOS is mandatory”. To resolve it, we need to restart our machine. Before it ignites, press F2 and go to BIOS. If virtualization is disabled, please enable it (as shown in the video).
Second problem is hosts file. The path of which is as under:
C:WindowsSystem32driversetc
Right click on hosts file, and uncheck where read only is written. Save. Boom. Local by Flywheel will start installing without any problem.
Once installed, we discussed how to configure it. How to create dev site and enable ssl. How to stop and start site and how to enable live link and disable it. We also explored its preferences and change theme from light to dark. Its UI is cool.
We can stop the site, close the software and restart it again when and if needed.
We can view site and go to wp-admin directly from the Local by Flywheel’s admin dashboard. Buttons are available.
Local by Flywheel keeps all its files in a folder i.e. Local Sites.
WAMP keeps all sites in WWW folder.
XAMPP keeps all files in htdocs folder.
