How to Use Sponge Tool in Photoshop

How to Use Sponge Tool in Photoshop

In this 41st tutorial, we are going to learn about Sponge Tool. This is one of the most basic and powerful tools in Adobe Photoshop for saturating or desaturating an image, part of an image or selected area. Basically, in the retouching industry, the Burn tool ,the Dodge tool and the Sponge tool can work hand in hand. Each tool has its own options that we can choose from the option bar. The use of Sponge Tool is fairly simple. It has two painting modes with a special option i.e. Vibrance. The keyboard shortcut key for the Sponge tool is letter’O’. This tool can be in the Dodge Tool sub panel. When Sponge tool is selected, we can right click and change the brush size, tip etc. We also discussed how flow works with both modes : 1) Saturate Mode, and 2) Desaturate Mode The one liner is: 1) Dodge is for lightening 2) Burn is for Darkening, and 3) Sponge Tool is for Saturation or vice versa. Vibrance is sort of protection against clipping. At times, clipping may occur when we saturate or desaturate an image. By checking this option ON, we can avoid that clipping. Sponge tool also works in grey scale mode. It shifts pixels from white or black towards grey pixels. It is nondestructive, but we can always duplicate layer to carry on.

How to Use Burn Tool in Photoshop

How to Use Burn Tool in Photoshop

In this 40th tutorial, we are going to learn about Burn Tool. This is one of the most basic and powerful tools in Adobe Photoshop for retouching and darkening pixels as per exposure and range values selected from the option bar. Basically, in the retouching industry, the Burn tool and the Dodge tool work in conjunction. Both tools lighten or darken areas of the image. As Adobe Help states “these tools are based on a traditional darkroom technique for regulating exposure on specific areas of a print. Photographers hold back light to lighten an area on the print (dodging) or increase the exposure to darken areas on a print (burning). The more you paint over an area with the Dodge or Burn tool, the lighter or darker it becomes.” The keyboard shortcut key for the Burn tool is letter’O’. When burn tool is selected, we can right click and change the brush size, tip etc. We also discussed three modes of range: 1) Highlights – the lighter areas of the image 2) Midtones – in between highlights and shadows – the mid range 3) Shadows – the darker areas of the image In the option bar, there is a powerful option called ‘Protect Tones’. It helps in protecting tones and getting rid of clipping of the highlights and shadows. We can also specify exposure range. Exposure is a well known term in Photography. We have over exposed and low exposure images. When an image is over exposed, we call it a blown out image. Likewise, the low exposure means the image has less defined pixels on the brighter scale. The use of Burn tool is very straight forward. All we need is to drag over the part of the image where we want to improve darker pixels or to darken lighter areas of the image.

In this 38th tutorial, we are going to learn about Smudge Tool. This is one of the most basic tools in Adobe Photoshop for simulating pixels on a Photoshop Layer or document. With the Finger Painting option checked, we can drag our mouse as we drag our finger in the wet paint in real life. The Smudge Tool can be used with the help of selective blend modes as per the strength level chosen in the option bar. As it functions same as the brush tool does, therefore, we can increase or decrease brush size, change brush tip, and alter brush presets. Smudging the pixels mean we shift the pixels and expand them . Foreground Color is applied to each beginning stroke when the finger painting option is checked ;otherwise, it picks up the color from the area we start smudging from. We can also select Sample All Layer and work on new layer non destructively.

How to Use Sharpen Tool in Photoshop

How to Use Gradient Tool in Photoshop

In this 34th tutorial, we are going to learn about Gradient Tool. This is one of the most basic tools in Adobe Photoshop for creating a gradual blend or smooth transition between two or more colors. In the Gradient panel, we have gradient presets to choose from, or we can create our own gradients as well. To activate Gradient Tool in Photoshop, we can press letter ‘G’ from the keyboard or we can manually select this tool from Photoshop Tool Panel. To fill the gradient in a specific area or object, we need to first select that specific area else the gradient will be filled in the whole layer or Photoshop Document. We also talked about 5 Gradient Styles:

1) Linear Gradient: It blends two or more colors in a straight light (The Linear Way).

2) Radial Gradient : It blends two or more colors in a circular pattern (Circular Radius)

3) Angle Gradient : Two or more colors blend in Counterclockwise Sweep angle.

4) Reflected Gradient : As the name states, it blends two or more colors with mirror like reflection on both ends.

5) Diamond Gradient : It blends two or more colors in a diamond pattern starting from the center to corners. Blending Modes in Gradient Wool: Yes, we have all blending modes available. We can fill gradients as per the selected blending mode and effect will be there. We discussed in detail : 1) Gradient Picker Panel 2) Gradient Editor, and 3) Gradient Presets Manager We can: 1) Load Gradients 2) Create our own Gradients and Save them to share with our friends and colleagues etc. 3) Rename , Edit and Delete any gradient.

The power of this tutorial lies in the section where we discussed gradient bar. Gradient graphical bar represents three sections: 1) Right Side is for Lighter Color Values. (Whites etc) 2) In the middle, we have Mid Tones, and 3) Left side is for Darker color values (Blacks etc) If we want to apply gradient to our shadows or blacks, we need to select that color on Left Color Stop of that gradient bar. Likewise, if we want to apply gradient to our lighter pixels (whites etc), we need to put that color stop on right side of the bar accordingly. Opacity Stops: Opacity Stops are used to control the opacity of the color stop. Color Stops: We can double click on a color stop to change color from color picker. We can also click once and access the same color picker for color stop panel from the provided color box underneath. We can delete stops just by holding and dragging them down (Color Stops) and by dragging them up (Opacity Stops). If we click once on any stop, a delete button will appear. We can delete it from there as well. We also talked about Foreground to Background and Foreground to Transparent Gradients and their multiple uses. We briefly discussed Gradient Maps in this tutorial. Gradient Maps are very useful to have Instagram like effects on our photos etc. Adobe Photoshop’s Gradient Tool is a wonderful and powerful tool. With its help, we can create interesting effects to make our projects a Big WOW.

This is one of the most basic tools in Adobe Photoshop for erasing pixels on a Photoshop Layer or object to transparent checkerboard. The background eraser tool, like eraser tool in Photoshop, offers destructive work flow. Once the pixels are erased, they are gone. It has different sampling and tolerance range options. We can also set three different types of limits while erasing background with this tool. We also discussed about decreasing or increasing brush size. A real life example of curly hair background removal is also presented to give you an idea how and when to use The Background Eraser Tool. We also talked a lot many Adobe Photoshop Software’s useful tips, tricks and secrets. As the background eraser tool is very much like brush; therefore, we can use it the same way to erase pixels from desired areas. We can set different brush tips, sizes, hardness values and angle etc. Three limits are as under: 1: Dis contiguous means that the background eraser tool can erase pixels beyond the sampled cluster of pixels. 2: Contiguous means that the background eraser tool erases pixels within the close vicinity as per tolerance range and pixel data available. 3: Find Edges, as the name states, finds edges and erases pixel data in between edges. Blending modes are not an option in the background eraser tool’s option bar.
